Orientation
  • Evacuation diagrams must be oriented so that they correspond to the viewer’s actual physical orientation in the building.
  • This means the top of the diagram should correspond to the direction the viewer is facing when reading the diagram.
Content Requirements
  • The floor or area layout, "You are here" marker and Assembly areas must be prominently displayed.
  • Diagrams must show the direction to the nearest exit and emergency exits.
  • The locations of fire fighting equipment, emergency lights, communication equipment, and first aid kits should be clearly marked.
Design and Size
  • The diagrams should be designed to be clear and legible, with a recommended size to ensure readability (usually not smaller than A4 size).
  • They must be kept up-to-date and reflect any structural or functional changes within the facility.
Update Frequency
  • The diagrams should be reviewed regularly and updated as needed to ensure they accurately reflect the current layout and safety equipment placements within the facility.
  • A full review is recommended at intervals not exceeding 5 years or whenever significant changes to the building layout occur.
Compliance and Training
  • Staff should be trained on the details of the evacuation diagrams as part of regular emergency response training.
  • Compliance with these standards helps ensure that all personnel are familiar with escape routes and emergency procedures, enhancing the overall safety of the facility.
Location and Visibility
  • Evacuation diagrams must be prominently displayed at all locations within a facility where they can be viewed easily by occupants and visitors.
